The Tasmanian Government is committed to working with the state's biotechnology sector to assist its growth whilst ensuring high ethical standards in research projects.
The Tasmanian Government is aware that a commitment to high ethical standards in research must be expressed in procedures, systems and rules that secure full accountability, transparency and integrity. As a result it is working towards improving the current legal and ethical framework in order to achieve world’s best practice in bioethics.
A major ethical review of research involving humans has been undertaken within the State. The University of Tasmania and Department of Health and Human Services have collaborated to establish a statewide human research ethics committee system. A draft proposal for Human Research Ethics Legislation has been developed and has been submitted to the Minister for Health and Human Services for endorsement prior to seeking approval by Cabinet.
In addition, the Tasmanian Government is currently working towards addressing issues surrounding the protection of human genetic information. The Department of Premier and Cabinet is in the final stages of preparing a draft Personal Information Protection Bill for Tasmania .
