About the Bioethics Australia website
This site has been established to increase the awareness of bioethics and improve the Australian public’s access to information about bioethics.
The site acts as an information portal to bioethics and biotechnology-related information in all State and Territory Governments and the Australian Government.
The site is part of a National Approach to Ethics in Biotechnology established by the Biotechnology Liaison Committee (BLC).
The BLC was established in late 2001 with agreement by all States and Territories and the Australian Government, to participate in the development of strategies for coordinating Australia’s emerging biotechnology policies. The Committee, comprised of nominated senior government officials:
- encourages greater harmonisation and coordination between all key government biotechnology agencies;
- exchanges information and raises awareness of biotechnology strategies and initiatives;
- explores opportunities for collaborating, developing synergies and avoiding duplication in the implementation of the Australian Government’s National Biotechnology Strategy and State and Territory biotechnology policies/strategies; and
- as necessary, develops coordinated recommendations to Australian Government and State/Territory Ministers on policies for a harmonised Australian approach to biotechnology and related issues.
